Esstac Shingle Mag Pouch with KYWI - I like that these mag pouches bridge the gap between hard plastic and soft/ cloth mag pouches. The retention is perfect. I prefer open top mag pouches to any other type because when you need more ammo you REALLY need more ammo. Fumbling with a velcro flap or even a bungee can be out of the question for the first 4 mags at a minimum. View More SKD Staff Picks

Don't Like bungee topped magazine pouches? Prefer an open topped pouch for rapid magazine changes? Then these new user-installed Kydex upgrades for the Esstac Wedge magazine pouches and Boar series chest rigs are for you.

The Esstac KYWI (Kydex Wedge Insert) allows you to have the option of swapping out all your existing Esstac bungee retention inserts with a quick open topped friction retention design, or swap out just a few for quicker access while leaving the rest of the mags with the added security of the bungee topped inserts. Magazines in the Kydex have enough compression against them to hold the magazines in place even when the pouch is upside down yet with a quick pull on the magazine they release for speedy deployment.

The spring loaded nature of these Kydex inserts keep the mouth of the Magazine pocket fully open for ease of magazine reinsertion yet hold the mags tight under compression. The apex of the KYWI that contacts the magazine sits above the Mag catch bump when the magazine is in place, so the mags "click" into place.

They are compatible with Pmags, USGI, Orilite, Thermold and Lancer magazines as well as most other 5.56 AR-15/M4/M16 type magazines. Aluminum and steel magazines may need sharp edges chamfered to alleviate excessive wear to the Kydex.

Disclaimer:

Will these 5.56 KYWI inserts work in other manufacturers equipment? The honest truth we have no idea. We have been told by customers that our 5.56 KYWI inserts work in other manufacturers equipment but we can't tell you which ones they do and don't work in. We do not buy other gear company's equipment and test our inserts in them so we can't tell you what they are going to work or not work in. If you decide to buy our 5.56 KYWI insert to use in a different manufacturers equipment that is your choice.

    Solid Product

I ordered these to go in my Haley Strategic D3CR Heavy. I wanted to use these when running AR mags so I wouldn't have to use the bungee retention. The inserts fit well and hold the magazine very snug.

    Try this one

Pop one of these in each back pocket of your jeans or carhartts and you have a genuine hillbilly mag pouch sure to infuriate and agitate your local spec ops seal ranger wannabe. Try it, you don't have to look like you are going to Abbottabad to be ready to throw down. It works, surprisingly well.

I use it on my kit and it does wonders. Easy to use takes a bit of practice to get use of them. If you don't want hard tacos buy this.

Necessity is the mother of invention

No more bungee type retention that dry rots, breaks, melts and all the other failures. I guess you could wear the kydex out after about 100,000 pulls. Great product. My wife says the make me better at sex.

    Great insert

Debated between this and the Haley insert. Picked this one based on cost (cheaper but it was also on sale on top of that) and the fact that it functions more or less the same. Used it in a carbine class today and had no problems with it not holding form and they never moved from the pouch (Haley Strategic D3 chest rig). I liked how the velcro hooks helped keep things more in place. However, I think maybe something that might be as sticky but less abrasive (depending on your application) might be some type of tacky rubberized material.

    Esstac Inserts

Posted by John M on 21st Jul 2016

I had recently purchased a Condor Triple Stacked 223/5.56 Magazine Pouch. The magazine pouch was offset (one tall with a shorter one in front of the tall pouch) and came with the paracord lines. I ordered 1 of the 30 round Esstac Kydex Insert to see if it would fit and it was a perfect fit. It Fit so well, I could pull the magazine in and out without the insert coming out. So I ordered 2 more 30 round magazine inserts. Now the short magazine pouches was much shorter, so when I ordered the 2 tall inserts, I purchased 3 20 round short inserts in hopes they would fit like the tall ones. Well, to my joyous surprise, they fit PERFECTLY. The inserts stay in place perfectly without the problem of trying to sew velcro to the insides of the mag pouches. They work perfectly in my Condor Magazine Pouch. I have tested them in different environments and under maximum stress and they retain my magazines whether I am running, swimming, climbing, or upside down.

I put these in all my mag pouches. Positive retention without something over the top of the mag. Absolutely love them.
