Esstac 762 KYWI (pronounced "kiwi")

Don't Like bungee topped magazine pouches? Prefer an open topped pouch for rapid magazine changes? Then these new user-installed Kydex upgrades for the Esstac Wedge magazine pouches and Boar series chest rigs are for you.

The Esstac KYWI (Kydex Wedge Insert) allows you to have the option of swapping out all your existing Esstac bungee retention inserts with a quick open topped friction retention design, or swap out just a few for quicker access while leaving the rest of the mags with the added security of the bungee topped inserts. Magazines in the Kydex have enough compression against them to hold the magazines in place even when the pouch is upside down yet with a quick pull on the magazine they release for speedy deployment.

The spring loaded nature of these Kydex inserts keep the mouth of the Magazine pocket fully open for ease of magazine reinsertion yet hold the mags tight under compression. The apex of the KYWI that contacts the magazine sits above the Mag catch bump when the magazine is in place, so the mags "click" into place.

These will work with all Boar series chest rigs and Wedge pouches in 7.62. They are compatible with M14, FAL, SR-25, DPMS, Pmag magazines. Steel magazines may need sharp edges chamfered to alleviate excessive wear to the Kydex.

    Great Retrofit

Posted by Brian on 3rd Aug 2021

Used 4 of these inserts for a D3CRX-Heavy. Removed the bungees and have perfect retention with no modifications. True drop-in compatibility. Holds well on all types of AK mags without being impossible to pull with one hand and punching yourself in the mouth. Highly recommend !

    As advertised

Posted by Paul Sampson on 31st Jan 2020

Received as ordered in a timely manner. Bit of a learning curve fitting them to the pouch, but once in they perform as advertised. Mags stay in place but come out easily when pulled. Will be getting more in the future, definitely

    Initial impressions

Posted by NJ on 6th Oct 2017

These inserts will be used in a Unity Clutch battle belt with FAL mags for supported weapon. Fit and hold with empty mags is good. As a secondary platform improvement I did try the fit of these inserts in an ATS chest rig with open top mag pockets, but the fit was too tight for practical applications.

To tall for all 7.62 pouches i have.

Posted by Colin Carr on 10th Sep 2017

These are almost the same height as the 5.56, but all the pouches I own are 2/3rd the height of the 5.56 pouches. To tall and won't stay inside any pouch I own. Definitely take measurements of your pouches and compare to insert prior to purchasing.

    Inserts

Bought these to insert into my 7.62 placard for the Mayflower APC for quicker access during matches. No velcro in the placard but they held in just fine, even when the M14 locking tabs would grab the divider webbing. Quick shipping.

    Doesn't really fit m1a mags

Posted by Steve on 24th Feb 2017

If you take your time... You can squeeze them in... But as they are they are too tight to realistically fit 3 mags. I had to modify and rip stitches so they would fit. Also the bottom of the pouches are folded inward and stitched so the "lip" catches the edges of the mag so they have to be forcefully pushed in/past the stitching. Not a lot of options for us m1a guys...I was really hoping these would work. I also bought judex inserts to try and aid in magazine inserting but that also isn't work. There isn't enough room/fabric to fit around the magazines. If they were about .25-.5 inches bigger all these issues would be mitigated... Too bad... All the materials used were good and the stitches were great. This product shouldn't be labeled as usable for m1a magazines. Also mags fit perfect with room to reinsert one handed. Ar10 mags were the same. M1a, fal, steel box mags are a no go.

    Quality product

Posted by John H on 8th Nov 2016

These inserts are well made and have Velcro that keeps them nice and snug inside the pouch. Not much else to say about them other than they do the job quite well. A big thanks to the skdtac team for the quality service and fast shipping!

Holy Grail for mag pouches...not yet.

Posted by Charles Ho on 8th Oct 2015

These inserts are about 4" tall and I found that they will fit inside a TT open top .308 single mag pouch perfectly. The top of the insert is just flush with the mouth of the pouch. I was hoping to put together a chest rig that would pull double duty with 5.56 and .308 mags. 5.56 mags aren't quite snug enough. .308 mags slide in and out great with just the right amount of friction. I haven't tried AK mags yet.
