Esstac Shingle Mag Pouch with KYWI - I like that these mag pouches bridge the gap between hard plastic and soft/ cloth mag pouches. The retention is perfect. I prefer open top mag pouches to any other type because when you need more ammo you REALLY need more ammo. Fumbling with a velcro flap or even a bungee can be out of the question for the first 4 mags at a minimum. View More SKD Staff Picks
Don't Like bungee topped magazine pouches? Prefer an open topped pouch for rapid magazine changes? Then these new user-installed Kydex upgrades for the Esstac Wedge magazine pouches and Boar series chest rigs are for you.
The Esstac KYWI (Kydex Wedge Insert) allows you to have the option of swapping out all your existing Esstac bungee retention inserts with a quick open topped friction retention design, or swap out just a few for quicker access while leaving the rest of the mags with the added security of the bungee topped inserts. Magazines in the Kydex have enough compression against them to hold the magazines in place even when the pouch is upside down yet with a quick pull on the magazine they release for speedy deployment.
The spring loaded nature of these Kydex inserts keep the mouth of the Magazine pocket fully open for ease of magazine reinsertion yet hold the mags tight under compression. The apex of the KYWI that contacts the magazine sits above the Mag catch bump when the magazine is in place, so the mags "click" into place.
They are compatible with Pmags, USGI, Orilite, Thermold and Lancer magazines as well as most other 5.56 AR-15/M4/M16 type magazines. Aluminum and steel magazines may need sharp edges chamfered to alleviate excessive wear to the Kydex.

Will these 5.56 KYWI inserts work in other manufacturers equipment? The honest truth we have no idea. We have been told by customers that our 5.56 KYWI inserts work in other manufacturers equipment but we can't tell you which ones they do and don't work in. We do not buy other gear company's equipment and test our inserts in them so we can't tell you what they are going to work or not work in. If you decide to buy our 5.56 KYWI insert to use in a different manufacturers equipment that is your choice.

Perfect match
I purchased the Kydex Inserts for my Condor Double 5.56 Magazine Pouch. The pouches are staggered, so I was worried that the 20 round inserts were not going to work like the 30 round inserts in the tall magazine pouches. So, to Mt delight, they fit PERFECTLY!! I am deploying in 10 days and I was worried that the items were not going to arrive in time, so I took a chance and you guys rock!!!!!!! I received the inserts so quickly I couldn't belive it when I tracked the package and it said it was delivered. I will recommend SKD Tactical to anyone and everyone that wants quality tactical equipment at killer prices! Their shipping is lightning fast and now I am equipped to fight for my country without worrying if my equipment will hold up. Sincerely, John Mertz U.S. Army Ranger 1st Battalion, 75th Regiment EOD/Medical

Excellent product, decent shipping time, can't use
I bought these to put into the kangaroo pouch of my JPC, after reading that they fit and worked well. It took about two weeks for the set to arrive. I put them in and they stuck out a ton. I tried to run a loop of paracord around the top to squeeze it a bit smaller, but it still wasn't doing the trick. It's a great product, it's just not right for what I need it for. Also does not fit in Flyye and Condor shingles.

Worked in jpc with modifications
When I put these in my jpc, it held the kangaroo pouch open too far. I ended up using the fuzzy side of self adhesive Velcro to hold the open end somewhat closed and put additional Velcro that corresponded to the kangaroo pouch on the outside. The finished product looks similar to the Ferro Concepts insert. The Kiwi's work great now.

Esstac 556 KYWI (Kydex Wedge Insert)
I put these into a Condor 4 mag pouch. The outer two pockets of the pouch are 20rd sized, the inner two pockets are30rd. By using the inserts in just the outer (20rd) pockets, they apply pressure to all 4 pockets. While they aren't helping with quickly depositing mags as much as I'd hoped, they do provide decent retention. This helps since I prefer to run the pouches without bungees.

Esstac KYWI
These are excellent quality and work in quite a few different pouches provided the have the loop side velcro in them. Not only do they hold magazines, they can also retain my multi tool and even a pistol if needed. SMG mags also work. Very great versatile product.

Great Product!
The heavy vest we are issued at work have bungee cords that keep our magazines secured. Sounds good right? Not when you are trying to get them out! Took those cords out and put these in my front pouch... ACES! Works great! Keeps them tightly secured with no movement or sound! Only issue (no a product issue) I had was I had to gorilla glue a small piece of Velcro into my pouch to accept the wedge inserts Velcro.

Esstac 556 KYWI (Kydex Wedge Insert)
Purchased these inserts for both rifle and pistol pouches. Have not had a chance to test at the range have SWAT training next week so will have a chance to run them hard. Initial fit seems legit, mags are locked in tight. Shipping was fast , will definitely buy from SKD in the future.
