Esstac Shingle Mag Pouch with KYWI - I like that these mag pouches bridge the gap between hard plastic and soft/ cloth mag pouches. The retention is perfect. I prefer open top mag pouches to any other type because when you need more ammo you REALLY need more ammo. Fumbling with a velcro flap or even a bungee can be out of the question for the first 4 mags at a minimum. View More SKD Staff Picks

Don't Like bungee topped magazine pouches? Prefer an open topped pouch for rapid magazine changes? Then these new user-installed Kydex upgrades for the Esstac Wedge magazine pouches and Boar series chest rigs are for you.

The Esstac KYWI (Kydex Wedge Insert) allows you to have the option of swapping out all your existing Esstac bungee retention inserts with a quick open topped friction retention design, or swap out just a few for quicker access while leaving the rest of the mags with the added security of the bungee topped inserts. Magazines in the Kydex have enough compression against them to hold the magazines in place even when the pouch is upside down yet with a quick pull on the magazine they release for speedy deployment.

The spring loaded nature of these Kydex inserts keep the mouth of the Magazine pocket fully open for ease of magazine reinsertion yet hold the mags tight under compression. The apex of the KYWI that contacts the magazine sits above the Mag catch bump when the magazine is in place, so the mags "click" into place.

They are compatible with Pmags, USGI, Orilite, Thermold and Lancer magazines as well as most other 5.56 AR-15/M4/M16 type magazines. Aluminum and steel magazines may need sharp edges chamfered to alleviate excessive wear to the Kydex.

Disclaimer:

Will these 5.56 KYWI inserts work in other manufacturers equipment? The honest truth we have no idea. We have been told by customers that our 5.56 KYWI inserts work in other manufacturers equipment but we can't tell you which ones they do and don't work in. We do not buy other gear company's equipment and test our inserts in them so we can't tell you what they are going to work or not work in. If you decide to buy our 5.56 KYWI insert to use in a different manufacturers equipment that is your choice.

    awesome piece of kit

These wedges are cool, so in a nut shell if u have a single mag pouch u wanna convert into a speed reload source;if these wedges fit, they might be a good choice for you. I used these in my d3 chest rig from HSP. I ran everything from closed top velcro pouches, bungee cord pouches, and even snap button pouches. Being sick and tired of having to fumble with these retention devices, simple friction retention as in the case of the esstac wedges make a great solution for the shooter who likes his reloads smooth

Holds mags very secure. Im using these in a mayflower gen 4 chest rig and the mags are held tighter than I expected good for retention but I find I fight them in and out a little bit maybe they will work in a bit with use. Skd is my go to site shipping is fast and pain free. Keep up the great work.

Excellent accessory for the Recon Rifle Bag

Perfect addition to the front mag pouches of the Recon Rifle Bag. They add both form and function by allowing quick and secure placement and removal of 30 round Magpul 556 magazines.

    I love these things!

Have these inserts in all my rifle mag pouches. I tried one to start, loved them, and now have several. They retain PMags and other mag types very well, and have never lost a mag, or even had one pop loose, while running in various training classes.

    Wedge Inserts

SUPER TIGHT fit. I am running Condor AR mag pouches. One is a double stack, the other a single with a pistol mag holder. The tightness could vary with different pouches. My experience is that I had to work the angles of the kydex and make them less aggressive in order to get them to fit and not hinder use of the other magazine. Out of the box, the wedges were so tight that when you pulled one mag out of the double mag pouch, It pushed the opening of the empty pouch closed to the point where it was impossible to insert a mag without work. After adjusting the kydex, I seemed to get a better fit and am able to pull and insert mags normally with one hand. They will probably require some work on your part to adjust. I feel more work could be put into them from the factory. For example, the top edges should be beveled to help mag insertion. As they are now, they are just squared off, cut kydex pieces... which work, but the fit and finish could be a little better.

    Esstac Kydex inserts work great!

I purchased to work with my Haley Stategic D3 Chest Rig. They work perfectly. I decided to trim them for a better fit but wasn't necessary. I would definitely recommend these for your pouches.
