Esstac Shingle Mag Pouch with KYWI - I like that these mag pouches bridge the gap between hard plastic and soft/ cloth mag pouches. The retention is perfect. I prefer open top mag pouches to any other type because when you need more ammo you REALLY need more ammo. Fumbling with a velcro flap or even a bungee can be out of the question for the first 4 mags at a minimum. View More SKD Staff Picks

Don't Like bungee topped magazine pouches? Prefer an open topped pouch for rapid magazine changes? Then these new user-installed Kydex upgrades for the Esstac Wedge magazine pouches and Boar series chest rigs are for you.

The Esstac KYWI (Kydex Wedge Insert) allows you to have the option of swapping out all your existing Esstac bungee retention inserts with a quick open topped friction retention design, or swap out just a few for quicker access while leaving the rest of the mags with the added security of the bungee topped inserts. Magazines in the Kydex have enough compression against them to hold the magazines in place even when the pouch is upside down yet with a quick pull on the magazine they release for speedy deployment.

The spring loaded nature of these Kydex inserts keep the mouth of the Magazine pocket fully open for ease of magazine reinsertion yet hold the mags tight under compression. The apex of the KYWI that contacts the magazine sits above the Mag catch bump when the magazine is in place, so the mags "click" into place.

They are compatible with Pmags, USGI, Orilite, Thermold and Lancer magazines as well as most other 5.56 AR-15/M4/M16 type magazines. Aluminum and steel magazines may need sharp edges chamfered to alleviate excessive wear to the Kydex.

Disclaimer:

Will these 5.56 KYWI inserts work in other manufacturers equipment? The honest truth we have no idea. We have been told by customers that our 5.56 KYWI inserts work in other manufacturers equipment but we can't tell you which ones they do and don't work in. We do not buy other gear company's equipment and test our inserts in them so we can't tell you what they are going to work or not work in. If you decide to buy our 5.56 KYWI insert to use in a different manufacturers equipment that is your choice.

    this is the coolest thing

I wish I'd thought of this. It has great retention on all my mags in all of my pouches that I have.

    Simple secure solution

Posted by Jeffery Hamilton on 7th Oct 2015

Of course, SKD customer service is a benchmark for what others should aspire to. The item itself fit nicely into my mag slots, and I did a pretty aggressive test - no falling out, even with a loaded mag, but were easy to draw from. I've not ever been a fan of mag pouches with any kind of closure, even the bungee cord. Problem solved! Now I wish ESSTAC would sell the darn things separately for handgun mag pouches like they do for rifle pouches!

    Great Product

Exactly what I was looking for. Hold my magazines without the need for bungees.

    Great for HSP D3CR

Posted by Earle Combs on 7th Oct 2015

I trimmed the 30 round version with an exacto knife to fit in the Haley Strategic Disruptive Environments Chest Rig. They retain the magazines very well and make reloads much faster. I am currently running 2 for faster reloads and kept the retention bungees on the other 2 mag pouches just to make sure I have mags left in case I yardsale. These are half the price of the HSP MP2 inserts and work really well, as long as you are comfortable trimming them yourself. Or, the 20 rounders might fit, but I have not tried them.

    So simple ...yet so effective

Posted by Jorge Aguilar on 7th Oct 2015

I purchased these inserts for MagFed Paintball. I had to mod the product since paintball mags are thicker, but it was really easy with a heat gun. Product works exactly as intended and makes mag re insertion real easy into my rig and now i dont have to use the elastic straps to secure the mags in place. Overall...i would highly recommend these for intended user or even for paintball (just know you will have to modify them a little.

    Excellent in My Condor Kangaroo

Posted by ESandov on 7th Oct 2015

Works exactly as its supposed to. Fit my Condor Kangaroo Triple mag pouch with no modification whatsoever. It allowed me to remove the retention bungees and now my AR mags click into place. I improved them a little by rounding the inner edge of the insert because they are a bit sharp and can create an edge when reinserting the mag. They did not slip out even though there is no Velcro loop on the inside of my pouches. I ended up buying some sticky back Velcro loop and sticking a patch inside each mag pouch but it was unnecessary. I ordered 4 of them.

    Simple but effective

These little inserts are great. Positive locked feel. Don't come out of your mag pouches and don't fit loosely on the mag. Love them.

    As Described

Posted by Devan on 7th Oct 2015

Great quality and very rigid. Holds in my stanags perfectly. Almost too much rigidity, I'll be softening & straightening them a bit in boiling water so they don't push so much on my pouches.

    Works well!

Posted by Brad on 7th Oct 2015

I tried this out in an TT single shingle and it worked very well! It was very tight. Time will tell how it loosens up.
