Esstac Shingle Mag Pouch with KYWI - I like that these mag pouches bridge the gap between hard plastic and soft/ cloth mag pouches. The retention is perfect. I prefer open top mag pouches to any other type because when you need more ammo you REALLY need more ammo. Fumbling with a velcro flap or even a bungee can be out of the question for the first 4 mags at a minimum. View More SKD Staff Picks

Don't Like bungee topped magazine pouches? Prefer an open topped pouch for rapid magazine changes? Then these new user-installed Kydex upgrades for the Esstac Wedge magazine pouches and Boar series chest rigs are for you.

The Esstac KYWI (Kydex Wedge Insert) allows you to have the option of swapping out all your existing Esstac bungee retention inserts with a quick open topped friction retention design, or swap out just a few for quicker access while leaving the rest of the mags with the added security of the bungee topped inserts. Magazines in the Kydex have enough compression against them to hold the magazines in place even when the pouch is upside down yet with a quick pull on the magazine they release for speedy deployment.

The spring loaded nature of these Kydex inserts keep the mouth of the Magazine pocket fully open for ease of magazine reinsertion yet hold the mags tight under compression. The apex of the KYWI that contacts the magazine sits above the Mag catch bump when the magazine is in place, so the mags "click" into place.

They are compatible with Pmags, USGI, Orilite, Thermold and Lancer magazines as well as most other 5.56 AR-15/M4/M16 type magazines. Aluminum and steel magazines may need sharp edges chamfered to alleviate excessive wear to the Kydex.

Disclaimer:

Will these 5.56 KYWI inserts work in other manufacturers equipment? The honest truth we have no idea. We have been told by customers that our 5.56 KYWI inserts work in other manufacturers equipment but we can't tell you which ones they do and don't work in. We do not buy other gear company's equipment and test our inserts in them so we can't tell you what they are going to work or not work in. If you decide to buy our 5.56 KYWI insert to use in a different manufacturers equipment that is your choice.

I bought these to put in my Haley Strategic D3 chest rig, and I am very pleased. They fit perfectly and hold my PMags as well as my Brownell's mags tightly. I highly recommend.

These turned some cheaper mag pouches into usable items. Just wish the double mag insert was available. Great item.

    Awesome addition for mag retention

I purchased these to use in the AR mag pouches I currently have (ATS Tall Singles). I had to do a little trimming but these worked awesome. Perfect amount retention without worrying if the mag will fly out during climbing or running. I am very happy with this purchase.

I'm using this in a Condor open top pouch with Magpul Gen2 mags. Fit is perfect without having to trim the insert. Fit is very snug and takes a concerted pull to remove the mag. The insert has stayed in place without Velcro or other attachments so far.

    Tight grip

Posted by William Keefe on 1st Jan 2015

These bad boys hold on tight. Maybe too tight for pmags. My mag pouches don't have Velcro inside to hold the insert in place so it pulled out with the mag I tied them in with 550 cord but it pull my plate carrier up. Hoping when I get my plates it holds down. This is the only bad thing I have to say about it. Shipped super fast and seems to be a solid product with some funny extras included.

Making your exsisting mag pouch better

Placed in my Emdom AK double mag pouch to hold (2) M4 Pmags. They were out of double wedges and I did not want to wait for restock so I used (2) wedges. I heated up one side of both Wedges and straightened it. Placed into the pouch and works great. Good retention and fast smooth draw for speed reloads. great piece of equipment. I wish I had these on my last 4 deployments.
