Esstac Shingle Mag Pouch with KYWI - I like that these mag pouches bridge the gap between hard plastic and soft/ cloth mag pouches. The retention is perfect. I prefer open top mag pouches to any other type because when you need more ammo you REALLY need more ammo. Fumbling with a velcro flap or even a bungee can be out of the question for the first 4 mags at a minimum. View More SKD Staff Picks

Don't Like bungee topped magazine pouches? Prefer an open topped pouch for rapid magazine changes? Then these new user-installed Kydex upgrades for the Esstac Wedge magazine pouches and Boar series chest rigs are for you.

The Esstac KYWI (Kydex Wedge Insert) allows you to have the option of swapping out all your existing Esstac bungee retention inserts with a quick open topped friction retention design, or swap out just a few for quicker access while leaving the rest of the mags with the added security of the bungee topped inserts. Magazines in the Kydex have enough compression against them to hold the magazines in place even when the pouch is upside down yet with a quick pull on the magazine they release for speedy deployment.

The spring loaded nature of these Kydex inserts keep the mouth of the Magazine pocket fully open for ease of magazine reinsertion yet hold the mags tight under compression. The apex of the KYWI that contacts the magazine sits above the Mag catch bump when the magazine is in place, so the mags "click" into place.

They are compatible with Pmags, USGI, Orilite, Thermold and Lancer magazines as well as most other 5.56 AR-15/M4/M16 type magazines. Aluminum and steel magazines may need sharp edges chamfered to alleviate excessive wear to the Kydex.

Disclaimer:

Will these 5.56 KYWI inserts work in other manufacturers equipment? The honest truth we have no idea. We have been told by customers that our 5.56 KYWI inserts work in other manufacturers equipment but we can't tell you which ones they do and don't work in. We do not buy other gear company's equipment and test our inserts in them so we can't tell you what they are going to work or not work in. If you decide to buy our 5.56 KYWI insert to use in a different manufacturers equipment that is your choice.

    Perfect!

Put these in my condor single stack pouches, work perfectly! With the way these are designed they push out on the insides of the pouch, staying firmly in place. I don't see a need for the velcro and don't use it, since I'm not a seamstress and the condor pouches don't have inner velcro. If you want good mag retention without the use of bungie cords, while retaining your current pouches, get these!

    Awesome !

Awesome product and fast shipping to HI. These inserts are easy to install and work awesome on my Esstac Boar ! Wish I had these last deployment. No more messing around with straps. TAC reloads are way faster, and no need to use pockets/Mag dumps.

    Outstanding alternative

The Esstac 556 KYWI wedge fit my single mag pouches perfectly, nice and deep. They hold my GI and PMag's in place and they don't flop around. Quick and easy access. I don't feel there is anything out here without a cover or bungee is totally secure. Just depends if you want quick and easy access with semi-secured or totally secure. They work for me with no qualms. Shipping was fast.

    556 KYWI

I'm on my base Quick Response Team (closest thing we have to SWAT), so we do a lot of shooting and weapons manipulation drills. The KYWI helps with tac reloads so much, with its retention eliminating the need for annoying shock cord and the added benefit of keeping the mouth of the mag pouch open so I can slip the used (but not empty) mag back in while keeping my focus downrange. I'm now ALWAYS the fastest when it comes to tactical reload drills, and I have complete faith that G-d forbid we were ever called out for real, I would be able to trust my life to KYWI's in addition to the rest of my gear.

    Nice Addition To Kangaroo Pouches

I run two in my Banshee's kangaroo pouch to keep slim profile and be able to hold 5 extra mags. Velcro holds them in place and they securely hold your mags.

    Great Product!

Great piece of kit. A quick fix to my issued triple M4 mag pouch with absolutely no retention. Once I added 3 KYWIs, I was ready to rock & roll. And no bungee retention to mess with during emergency reloads. 10/10.

    mag pouch inserts

These are great to keep your nylon mag pouches open so you can easily put magazines where they belong without fighting trying to shove them in.
