Esstac Shingle Mag Pouch with KYWI - I like that these mag pouches bridge the gap between hard plastic and soft/ cloth mag pouches. The retention is perfect. I prefer open top mag pouches to any other type because when you need more ammo you REALLY need more ammo. Fumbling with a velcro flap or even a bungee can be out of the question for the first 4 mags at a minimum. View More SKD Staff Picks

Don't Like bungee topped magazine pouches? Prefer an open topped pouch for rapid magazine changes? Then these new user-installed Kydex upgrades for the Esstac Wedge magazine pouches and Boar series chest rigs are for you.

The Esstac KYWI (Kydex Wedge Insert) allows you to have the option of swapping out all your existing Esstac bungee retention inserts with a quick open topped friction retention design, or swap out just a few for quicker access while leaving the rest of the mags with the added security of the bungee topped inserts. Magazines in the Kydex have enough compression against them to hold the magazines in place even when the pouch is upside down yet with a quick pull on the magazine they release for speedy deployment.

The spring loaded nature of these Kydex inserts keep the mouth of the Magazine pocket fully open for ease of magazine reinsertion yet hold the mags tight under compression. The apex of the KYWI that contacts the magazine sits above the Mag catch bump when the magazine is in place, so the mags "click" into place.

They are compatible with Pmags, USGI, Orilite, Thermold and Lancer magazines as well as most other 5.56 AR-15/M4/M16 type magazines. Aluminum and steel magazines may need sharp edges chamfered to alleviate excessive wear to the Kydex.

Disclaimer:

Will these 5.56 KYWI inserts work in other manufacturers equipment? The honest truth we have no idea. We have been told by customers that our 5.56 KYWI inserts work in other manufacturers equipment but we can't tell you which ones they do and don't work in. We do not buy other gear company's equipment and test our inserts in them so we can't tell you what they are going to work or not work in. If you decide to buy our 5.56 KYWI insert to use in a different manufacturers equipment that is your choice.

    works great!

These are well worth the money. My (forgot the brand name) were getting worn and stretched so instead of buying new ones thought I would give these a try. Glad I did, saved money, kept the ones I liked, and now can probably go a couple more years before the fabric is gone. These are tight and won't slip at all. No chance pMags will fall out. You can hear and feel then clip onto place, but the come out with a quick tug, but they won't fall, out accidentally. I installed mine in seconds using Gerber tactical multitool. Just close the mouth with the pliers abs and slip them into place and they stay put.

Highly recommend the Kywi Wedge Inserts. Perfect amount of tension for fast mag pull. I would recommend buying the Esstac Boar series for these for they are professionally tailored just right. Or modify your own pouches for these wedges. I have done both. Unfortunetly I blew my money on the PIG Brig. Great concept, however the tailoring was terrible. Some pouches were more fitted than others which made some tension hard as hell and other pouches too loose. Bad joojoo man! My Boar back panel pouches were all the same accross the board which was better suited for the Kywi Wedges, and my ass when doing reloads!! Regards.

    Glad I upgraded

These are easier to draw from and load into when compared to the shock-cord system (but not mind-blowing easier) and constantly "fill" the Boar-series chest racks so when you draw the magazine you don't create extra space between yourself and the chest rack. Not critical, but definitely an appreciated benefit.

    Awesome concept/ product

Posted by Jesse James on 1st Apr 2013

Have been running these the last couple of outings inserted in my chest rig. They use to have the bungees as their method of retention but I am glad this product was referred to me. Reloads are much faster and I'm not worried about my mag falling out. I've ran Troy battle mags and p mags and both fit securely. Highly recommend.

I have used these in the past and will continue to do so. the only improvement would be for the Velcro backing to be included for the pouch.

Great item to improve standard mag shingles

Posted by Alex on 1st Apr 2013

I have always hated mag shingles because of the bungee retention they use which is horrendously slow, and can suck in a hi-stress situation. When I picked up a crye jpc, I knew I had to do something about those shingles. I picked up a trio of kywis and now I have three emergency reloads ready to rock at a moment's notice. The only downsidei is how they work with metal mags. Aside from that, great product that might save a gunfighter's life.

    Bye Bye Bungees!!

Posted by Patrick Lock on 18th Mar 2013

These work exactly as advertised. I inserted them into a TAG Gladiator chest rig that has built in mag pouches. The fit is excellent and the retention is phenomenal. My pmags slide into the kywi effortlessly and stay there until deliberately pulled. Take off those slow bungees and buy these sweet high speed inserts.
