Esstac Shingle Mag Pouch with KYWI - I like that these mag pouches bridge the gap between hard plastic and soft/ cloth mag pouches. The retention is perfect. I prefer open top mag pouches to any other type because when you need more ammo you REALLY need more ammo. Fumbling with a velcro flap or even a bungee can be out of the question for the first 4 mags at a minimum. View More SKD Staff Picks

Don't Like bungee topped magazine pouches? Prefer an open topped pouch for rapid magazine changes? Then these new user-installed Kydex upgrades for the Esstac Wedge magazine pouches and Boar series chest rigs are for you.

The Esstac KYWI (Kydex Wedge Insert) allows you to have the option of swapping out all your existing Esstac bungee retention inserts with a quick open topped friction retention design, or swap out just a few for quicker access while leaving the rest of the mags with the added security of the bungee topped inserts. Magazines in the Kydex have enough compression against them to hold the magazines in place even when the pouch is upside down yet with a quick pull on the magazine they release for speedy deployment.

The spring loaded nature of these Kydex inserts keep the mouth of the Magazine pocket fully open for ease of magazine reinsertion yet hold the mags tight under compression. The apex of the KYWI that contacts the magazine sits above the Mag catch bump when the magazine is in place, so the mags "click" into place.

They are compatible with Pmags, USGI, Orilite, Thermold and Lancer magazines as well as most other 5.56 AR-15/M4/M16 type magazines. Aluminum and steel magazines may need sharp edges chamfered to alleviate excessive wear to the Kydex.

Disclaimer:

Will these 5.56 KYWI inserts work in other manufacturers equipment? The honest truth we have no idea. We have been told by customers that our 5.56 KYWI inserts work in other manufacturers equipment but we can't tell you which ones they do and don't work in. We do not buy other gear company's equipment and test our inserts in them so we can't tell you what they are going to work or not work in. If you decide to buy our 5.56 KYWI insert to use in a different manufacturers equipment that is your choice.

    Huge improvement!

These kydex wedge insert have exceeded my expectations. I was very impressed by how well they retained a magazine with almost a death lock grip on the magazine. Bungie cords and flaps are now obsolete. As for SKD Tactical I would definitely recommend to all my buddies! This was a very fast shipping

    Must Have for Esstac Pouches!

Posted by Alex on 5th Apr 2012

This is a must have addition to any of the Esstac Chest rigs. They replace the bungee retention that allows the user to draw magazines freely without having to throw a clasp, turn a flap, or fight a bungee cord. This is especially handy when you have magpuls or ranger plates. The retention is solid enough to secure the magazine, but not so tight that you need to fight it to draw. Worthwhile purchase.

    Awesome product

Awesome!!! I hate bungee straps on my mag pouches... I run either Eagle Industries w/ the kydex or TAG pistol/rifle pouches on all my kits. W/ the TAG pouches, I take the bugees off and put the KYWI inserts in. they stay in great even w/out any velco inside the mag pouch and the mags stay in very well. No problems and I run them a lot. Awesome product.

Works great, even in non-standard pouches

Ordered a couple of these in an attempt to see if they would solve the mag change problem with my Blackhawk vest. They worked perfectly and have since purchased a full complement for the vest. The inserts have allowed me to do away with the annoying bungee retainers entirely.

    Addictive.

Once you have KYWI in your Esstac pouches there's no going back. I ordered 2 for my Full Boar to see if I liked them, after that I was hooked and had to get them all. It makes re-insertion a breeze, and its just fast everywhere. I can't imagine going back.
