Esstac Shingle Mag Pouch with KYWI - I like that these mag pouches bridge the gap between hard plastic and soft/ cloth mag pouches. The retention is perfect. I prefer open top mag pouches to any other type because when you need more ammo you REALLY need more ammo. Fumbling with a velcro flap or even a bungee can be out of the question for the first 4 mags at a minimum. View More SKD Staff Picks

Don't Like bungee topped magazine pouches? Prefer an open topped pouch for rapid magazine changes? Then these new user-installed Kydex upgrades for the Esstac Wedge magazine pouches and Boar series chest rigs are for you.

The Esstac KYWI (Kydex Wedge Insert) allows you to have the option of swapping out all your existing Esstac bungee retention inserts with a quick open topped friction retention design, or swap out just a few for quicker access while leaving the rest of the mags with the added security of the bungee topped inserts. Magazines in the Kydex have enough compression against them to hold the magazines in place even when the pouch is upside down yet with a quick pull on the magazine they release for speedy deployment.

The spring loaded nature of these Kydex inserts keep the mouth of the Magazine pocket fully open for ease of magazine reinsertion yet hold the mags tight under compression. The apex of the KYWI that contacts the magazine sits above the Mag catch bump when the magazine is in place, so the mags "click" into place.

They are compatible with Pmags, USGI, Orilite, Thermold and Lancer magazines as well as most other 5.56 AR-15/M4/M16 type magazines. Aluminum and steel magazines may need sharp edges chamfered to alleviate excessive wear to the Kydex.

Disclaimer:

Will these 5.56 KYWI inserts work in other manufacturers equipment? The honest truth we have no idea. We have been told by customers that our 5.56 KYWI inserts work in other manufacturers equipment but we can't tell you which ones they do and don't work in. We do not buy other gear company's equipment and test our inserts in them so we can't tell you what they are going to work or not work in. If you decide to buy our 5.56 KYWI insert to use in a different manufacturers equipment that is your choice.

the gear is great, but what is the best if the service you get you buy they ship almost like they knew what you were going to buy before you buy it. if these guys sold groceries, cell phones or cars i would buy from them, amazon schm-amazon.

perfect for the tactical assault panel

Posted by ammo team chief on 22nd Jan 2012

I use magpuls on all my magazines. Which renders the Velcro straps on the Army issue TAP useless. After putting these in the mag pockets my magazines don't fall out. Real innovation and useless piece of kit

    Excellent addition for chest rig.

Posted by Unknown on 18th Jan 2012

Although these inserts are recommended for specific rigs, I use them with a single-stack magazine panel on a chest rig made by a different manufacturer. The fit and retention are still outstanding, and they seem like they would work on any velcro-lined (hook tape) pouch.

Didn't accomplish what I hoped it would.

Posted by Unknown on 5th Jan 2012

I purchased this insert because I thought I could use it to adapt my existing single mag shingles to a friction fit, without the expense of purchasing another $30 mag pouch. When inserted into a Tactical Tailor shigle the insert is very tight, and won't allow a magazine into the pouch. I suppose it only works with the Esstac pouches, oh well, maybe next time around I'll pick up a Esstac pouch to go with it, or maybe just another ITW fastmag because they work so well. I would see this being very handy for Boar users.

    KYWI

They work good but the velcro is stronger than the adhesive so if you try to adjust them the velcro can peel off the KYWI easily.

    Outstanding on the run

Outstanding. Put them in my BDS Tac single mag pouches, removed bungee cord, holds tight on the run, oustanding upgrade.

    556 Kywi Inserts from ESSTAC

Posted by SFC Charles Parker USAR on 18th Nov 2011

These are the best investment you can make for your Boar series or Wedge Pouches from ESSTAC. They hold the mags securely regardless of your situation. I ran these at FT Benning GA for the "All Army Small Arms Championships" last year. Our Team took 2nd place in Combined Arms (run and gun) lots of ground time and running, never lost a mag but my reload times were fantastic! I had more Soldier's asking me where to get thes than I could keep up with. Sorry about that Joe and Stu! Great Gear from 2 great companies.. cp out

Soooooo much better than elastic bands

Posted by Edwin Aldredge on 8th Nov 2011

I have these installed in my triple M4 shingles on an entry vest and plate carrier. They secure my loaded mags even upside down, and unlike the elastic bungees, they don't slip off or catch on crap. Too inexpensive and functional not to buy! THANKS SKD!

    Absolutely necessary for this rig

Posted by Daniel on 11th Oct 2011

In for a penny, in for a pound. I now have the complete rig....Boar chest rig, optional (yet also necessary) back panel, and now these. They make magazine changes very fast especially with polymer mags (low friction between the plastics). I was content without them until we did a practical exercise of mag changes. Getting a mag out of the rig without these were easy, BUT putting the empty mag back in was embarassingly awkward (its the little things that get you killed). There is a youtube video on how to install these that is ingeniusly easy...look it up before attempting.
