Esstac Shingle Mag Pouch with KYWI - I like that these mag pouches bridge the gap between hard plastic and soft/ cloth mag pouches. The retention is perfect. I prefer open top mag pouches to any other type because when you need more ammo you REALLY need more ammo. Fumbling with a velcro flap or even a bungee can be out of the question for the first 4 mags at a minimum. View More SKD Staff Picks

Don't Like bungee topped magazine pouches? Prefer an open topped pouch for rapid magazine changes? Then these new user-installed Kydex upgrades for the Esstac Wedge magazine pouches and Boar series chest rigs are for you.

The Esstac KYWI (Kydex Wedge Insert) allows you to have the option of swapping out all your existing Esstac bungee retention inserts with a quick open topped friction retention design, or swap out just a few for quicker access while leaving the rest of the mags with the added security of the bungee topped inserts. Magazines in the Kydex have enough compression against them to hold the magazines in place even when the pouch is upside down yet with a quick pull on the magazine they release for speedy deployment.

The spring loaded nature of these Kydex inserts keep the mouth of the Magazine pocket fully open for ease of magazine reinsertion yet hold the mags tight under compression. The apex of the KYWI that contacts the magazine sits above the Mag catch bump when the magazine is in place, so the mags "click" into place.

They are compatible with Pmags, USGI, Orilite, Thermold and Lancer magazines as well as most other 5.56 AR-15/M4/M16 type magazines. Aluminum and steel magazines may need sharp edges chamfered to alleviate excessive wear to the Kydex.

Disclaimer:

Will these 5.56 KYWI inserts work in other manufacturers equipment? The honest truth we have no idea. We have been told by customers that our 5.56 KYWI inserts work in other manufacturers equipment but we can't tell you which ones they do and don't work in. We do not buy other gear company's equipment and test our inserts in them so we can't tell you what they are going to work or not work in. If you decide to buy our 5.56 KYWI insert to use in a different manufacturers equipment that is your choice.

Holds tight, and yet easy draw

Posted by Aymeric Peze on 25th Jun 2010

Got those with the triple ESSTAC pouch to replace the bungee straps which I wasn't too keen on, and I'm very I glad I did so. The KIWI holds the mag tightly through the simple bend on the insert. Inserting the mags also give a slight clicking sensation, which tells you when the mag is secure. With the KIWI, you can mount your pouches up or down, the mags won't move by just bouncing around. The draw is still easy, quick, and rather silent. It even looks better that way! Highly recommended if you get ESSTAC pouches (opinion is given when used for Airsoft since not military).

    Can use with any shingle.

This insert can be used with just about any shingle with velcro closures. I have a set of three i use with my 7.62 shingles when i want to use M4 mags. I also have a set in my SOTEC shingle. Increases reload speed and decreases mag rattle.

    Excellent Product

This insert holds on the the mag tight so it won't fall out but not so tight you can't get it out of the pouch. The Esstac mag pouch plus this insert in my opinion is the best ar15 mag pouch available, and I've tried just about all of them.

    worthwhile upgrade

Posted by Norbert on 7th Jun 2010

I've grown to dislike bungies around my mags and these kydex inserts are a great alternative to them. They work as advertised. The bend in the inserts "clicks" over the mag catch bump on USGI mags and holds them firmly. I wouldn't hesitate to use these in any circumstance other than jumping out of a plane. By virtue of their "wide mouth" opening they make that pesky mag pocket under my right arm easily accessible (for the first time!)... They do add a few millimeters in thickness to the rig and they tend to dig into your ribs a bit more if not wearing armor, but these are minor issues.

    Out Standing Product

Posted by Cav Scout on 3rd May 2010

I just returned from a rotation at JRTC and had used this product to modify my BDS chest rig. Not once did the mags pop out or come free, most of my platoon had bets againts me that is was going to be a flop. Well its a good product, most of my guys and the Troop Commander are asking where they can get them.
