BALS Mk-2, Gen 2

Featured in the July 2009 issue of American Rifleman

  • 18 lb Cast Iron Rifle Rest with micro-adjustable feet? Check.
  • 2.5 lb Corn-filled Sock for a Rear Stock Bag? Check.
  • Humping either of these items with you into the field on a real world mission?
    NOT SO CHECK.

In the precision rifle world, there are a lot of Rifle Rests that are full of promises, but at the end of the day, you have to ask yourself which ones will be with you to help you make the critical shot in the field. Now you can always count on one benchrest item being with you all the time- the Sniper Bean Bag from BALS.

The MK-2 Sniper Bean Bag from Ballistic Adjustment Leveling Systems, LLC. (BALS) is the answer to precision marksmen who want the functionality of a Rifle Rest, without the inconvenience and hassle of having to carry one and store it everywhere they go. The Patent Pending design allows for simple installation onto a wide variety of stocks with straight combs, including most factory Bolt Gun stocks, and stocks from Manners, Bell & Carlson, HS Precision and McMillan.

The rifle bean bag on the MK-2 is incorporated with the popular Stockmate Rifle Pack design from PIG, and it stores conveniently up against the rearmost part of the stock, and can be silently released for immediate usage. When deployed, the rifle bean bag can lay horizontally or vertically via a slider, to maximize the range of adjustment. At 100 yards, the standard bean bag (included) allows the shooter about 30' in elevation variation from the lowest (horizontal) to highest (vertical) arrangement.

Whether in storage or operational mode, the rifle bean bag does not interfere with the shooter's cheek weld, and it does not interfere with off-hand shooting. The location of the bag also serves as a perfect counterbalance to barrel heavy precision rifles.

The MK-2's Cheek Rest has 1 layer of integrated foam like the PIG Stockmate Rifle Pack for a comfortable shock isolating cheek weld. The Bean Bag can be removed or replaced. The standard BALS Bag supplied with Mk-1 & Mk-2 BALS units measures: 3" x 2" x 4" / Weight (approximate): 8 oz.

The following are the specifications for Enlarged BALS that may be ordered and installed:

Sizes:

  • Med BALS Bag: 3.5" x 2.5" x 4.5" / Weight (approximate): 14 oz.
  • Large BALS Bag: 4" x 3" x 5" / Weight (approximate): 19 oz.
  • XL BALS Bag: 4" x 3" x 6" / Weight (approximate): 24 oz.

The MK-2 Sniper Bean Bag with Stock Pack is proudly made in the USA with the finest materials and manufacturing available. The rifle bean bags are filled with lightweight waterproof poly-fill, and constructed of 1000 Denier Cordura.

Whether you are on a dog hunt or using your rifle professionally, a Bean Bag or Rifle Rest can't help you if you forget to bring it, or can't set it up in time. We like to say that a Rifle Rest on the gun is worth ten on the bench.

The MK-2 will provide years of valuable service and finally give your rifle the one thing it really needs... BALS.

    Well designed product.

When I first took it out of the packaging I was a little skeptical as to what made this cheek rest better and different than the other ones on the market that cost significantly less. Well, I quickly found out. Fit an finish is top notch and the ammo storage and rear bag are simple. Grips nicely onto the finish of my B&C stock and doesn't move around. Cheek pad itself is beard snag free. Only thing I can really fault it on is I wish the elastic loops in the ammo pouch were a little less bunched up. Other than that, its about as close to perfect as it can get.

Solved my stock height problem nicely.

Stock was too low for good stock weld. I thought I might need to add padding below BALS to get a good weld, but no. It's just enough thickness to put my eye in exactly the right spot. Pack is good place for stuck case extractor, spare batteries, bore reflector, optic wipes, and scope covers.

    Great Product with Fast Shipping!!!

Posted by Adam on 1st Jan 2015

I ordered this product a couple of weeks ago, and it arrived two days later... I love fast shipping. Some people describe difficulties setting it up without instructions, but I just paused the video of it so I could see the lacing, and it is a fairly straightforward setup. I wish the bag had a little bit more beans in it, and I wish that the ammo slots in the pouch were more towards the front of the pouch than the back, but otherwise, this thing is perfect. I keep a small plastic bag with all of the allen wrenches I use on my rifle in the the ammo pouch (along with five rounds or .308), and the bean bag is great for what it is. I gave it five stars because I love the concept, and I've never seen any other product like it out there. Keep up the good work SKD!!!

    Works exactly like it should

I bought this for my Howa 1500 in 308 and wish I would have bought this sooner. I took it out to the desert and set up prone on a hill. Within seconds I was able to get on target and put five consistent shots down range nailing a 12" gong at about 250 yards. There is no noticeable added weight with this setup and yes the bag is detachable, but it is not really a quick detach, more that you can remove it for washing, etc. At first I thought the price was kind of high for this product, but after receiving it and using it I realized how much thought and design time went into creating this. It is really well made, and is worth every $. This is not some mass produced Chinese crap from the airsoft store. Also SKD's shipping is tops! I placed my order on Sunday, and on the same day I placed another order from a large online shooting retailer in MO. SKD's package showed up on Wednesday, the other place's package didn't show up 'till Saturday. SKD FTW!

    Does exactly what it should

Posted by Alexander Levine on 30th Jul 2014

My only complaint is the lack of instructions. It's not that complex, but a half sheet of paper with a diagram would save a fair bit of annoyance. The construction is very good, the suede like material is very comfy and the whole thing seems like it will hold up well. The padding is sufficient, and due to the design you can add more underneath if you need to. The beanbag is just the right size and weight. It's not in the way when shooting off hand or just not using it, but works great as a rear rest/squeeze bag when you want it. I was hesitant to spend this much on what amounted to a tiny pouch and cheek pad if the bag didn't pan out, but the BALS Mk2 gen 2 delivers.

Very nice pouch, once you figure out how to properly lace it up. No instructions. And no response to email asking how to install it. Once I got it figured out I have been very pleased with the pouch and bean bag feature.

Needs to come with more padding

    Posted by Antrim41 on 2nd Jan 2014

The cheek pad I ordered is of good quality and I like it other than it needs more padding. I have it 4 of 5 stars for this reason, other than the padding it would have 5. I researched a lot of cheek pads and I believe this was the best. I plan to add a bit of closed cell foam to get it to the height I require. Merry Christmas.

Fitted perfect on a Boyd's tacticool stock. Can adjust the bag to rest under the stock with no problems.. Great product.
